Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift Surgery) Cleveland and Columbus

BlepharoplastyA blepharoplasty is the medical term used to describe eyelid surgery. Eyelid lift surgery is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries performed today. Eyelid surgery can be performed both on the upper and lower eyelids to remove excess skin and, if necessary, muscle and fat to redefine aging eyelids.

Always striving for a natural appearance, Dr. Parry adheres to the philosophy of a balanced approach to cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.

The staff at the J. Parry Clinic are wonderful, not only are they knowledgeable but they are friendly too. I was welcomed and treated with respect my entire visit and didn’t feel rushed. The office is beautiful and I can wait for my next appointment!!

Eyelid Lift Surgery Goals

  • Tighten and reposition eyelid soft tissue to allow for a natural, rested, and youthful appearance
  • Correct the negative change in the shape of the eyes resulting from excess skin, muscle, and fat
  • Help reduces puffiness and dark circles under the eyes
  • Correct vision deficits due to excess skin covering the pupil of the eye (In some cases, this is covered by insurance)

Eyelid lift surgery will not correct fine lines, wrinkles around the eyes, or sagging of the brow. Eyelid surgery is often combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures such as brow/forehead lifts, laser skin resurfacing and Botox to achieve the best results. These options will be addressed thoroughly in the initial consultation process to determine the most effective, safe, and appropriate procedure.

Patients are sometimes evaluated by an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) prior to surgery to make sure no underlying eye disease may be present, as this could affect surgical outcomes.

In most cases, eyelid surgery can be performed safely in the office without the need of the operating room, therefore reducing the cost.

Your Eyelid Surgery will be performed by Dr. Jim Parry at his clinic in Mayfield Heights, OH located just outside of Cleveland and Columbus.

Upper Eyelid Lift

Excess skin, muscle, and fat are removed from the upper eyelid proportionally to help restore the original shape of the eyes. The incision is hidden in the natural eyelid crease. In some instances, to achieve the best results, a brow/forehead lift may also be needed. These factors will be addressed at the time of your initial consultation to determine the extent of surgery.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

Lower eyelid surgery helps to address redundant skin, muscle, and fat of the lower eyelid. Often, the patient is concerned with puffiness and dark circles under the eyes. In most instances, dark circles are caused by shadows being cast from fat bulging underneath the eyes.

Removing the fat often eliminates dark circles. However, in some cases, dark circles are caused by muscle showing through thin eyelid skin. These conditions, the overall health of the eyes, and various surgical approaches (such as subciliary and transconjunctival) will be addressed during the initial consultation process.

FAQs

  • How much downtime can I expect after blepharoplasty?

Sutures are removed on post-operative day 4. Follow-up care will continue over the course of the following year. Most patients can return to work in 3 to 5 days.

  • How much swelling and bruising will be present?

Most patients will experience some swelling and bruising which may last 3 to 14 days. The patient’s adherence to the post-operative instructions will have a direct impact on recovery. Most bruising can be temporarily camouflaged with make-up.

  • How much post-operative pain will I experience?

Post-operative pain is minimal. Most patients only require over-the-counter pain relievers or mild prescription pain medications prescribed by Dr. Parry.

  • When can I go back to work or exercise?

The majority of patients can return to work in 3 to 5 days. To achieve the best results, exercise should be avoided for 2 weeks after the procedure. Dr. Parry will personalize a recovery schedule for each patient.

  • How long does an eyelid lift take and what is the cost?

The time of the procedure can range from 30 min to 2 hours, depending on the complexity. Cost is dependent on the extent of the eyelid surgery being performed and will be discussed during the consultation with Dr. Parry.

  • Will insurance cover this procedure?

Sometimes if the eyelid skin is affecting the vision by blocking the pupil, it can be covered by insurance.

  • Will eyelid surgery prevent me from closing my eyelids or change the shape of my eye?

There are many physicians performing eyelid surgery without the proper fellowship training or board certification to perform these procedures. Unfortunately, this leads to disastrous results.
When performed by a highly trained and skilled surgeon such as Dr. Parry, who is double-board-certified and fellowship-trained, there is an extremely low risk of incomplete eyelid closure or unnatural shape following the surgery.

  • Can I have other cosmetic procedures performed at the same time as my eyelid lift surgery?

Yes. Often, patients will elect to get additional procedures such as a facelift, rhinoplasty, or forehead lift to reduce downtime and provide optimal results depending on the patient’s goals.

  • Will people know that I have had an eyelid lift surgery? Will I have scars?

Dr. Parry is a gifted and highly experienced double-board-certified fellowship-trained facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon. He always strives for a natural and balanced approach versus an overdone plastic look

The upper eyelid incision is hidden in the natural eyelid crease. The lower incision is hidden either at the lash line or slightly below it, depending on the surgical technique performed. Dr. Parry uses his surgical expertise in conjunction with post-operative care to ensure the scars are virtually invisible.

  • How long will an eyelid lift last?

There are many factors that will determine how long the results of the surgery will last. These include the type of eyelid lift, the health of the patient, and the patient’s level of commitment to the post-operative care.

The goal of this procedure is to return the patient to a more youthful appearance, turning back the clock 10 to 15 years. You will continue to naturally age, but you should always appear 10 to 15 years younger than your chronological age.
